Preschool

Mrs Gilbert

Mrs. Cheryl Gilbert is the teacher and director of our early childhood programs. Mrs. Gilbert has been the preschool teacher at Immanuel since 1990; she has her Masters of Arts in Teaching degree from Grand Canyon University and a B.S. in elementary education from Concordia University, Seward, Nebraska. Mrs. Gilbert has additional endorsements in early childhood education and Special Education. Mrs. Gilbert is the teacher for the Fantastic 4's and Fabulous 5's preschool classes.

Mrs Peterson

Mrs. Darcy Peterson has been the teacher of our Terrific 3's and Fantastic 4's classes since 2006. She graduated from Concordia College, Moorhead, Minnesota with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education. She is a licensed Colorado teacher with training in Early Childhood from Concordia.

Daycare

Immanuel offers daycare for students whose parents must be at work prior to, or after Preschool hours. Our licensed daycare is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Licensed daycare providers offer a nurturing and loving atmosphere for students to continue to mature and grow in God's love.

Your Child's School Day . . .

Is centered on God's incredible love for each of us. Your child will enjoy teacher planned and led group and small group activities that:

  • Celebrate Jesus time through stories and weekly devotions.
  • Explore their world through center activities, arts and science.
  • Explore music through weekly music classes.
  • Explore their physical abilities through weekly planned activities and gym classes.
  • Provide a weekly interaction with the middle-school aged children for reading, worship and fun.
  • Throughout the preschool programs, your child will begin to build a foundation of learning that will allow them to move comfortably into Kindergarten with the following skills:
  • Tactile addition and subtraction.
  • Recognition and use of numerals 1 to 10 and beyond.
  • Recognition of upper and lower case letters.
  • Beginning sound associations.

Kindergarten

Mrs Schnegelberger

Christine Schnegelberger has been the Kindergarten teacher at Immanuel since 1990. She has a B.S. from Concordia College, Seward, Nebraska, in Education and is working on a Masters in Early Childhood Development. Mrs. Schnegelberger taught at Holy Cross Lutheran School, St. Louis, Missouri for three years prior to teaching at Immanuel. Four words describe her well: diligent, kind, thorough, and sensitive.

Kindergarten Curriculum

God's love is the motivating force in our curriculum. The Bible provides orientation for all subjects and learning experiences. Children attend Chapel one day a week and have Jesus time four days a week where children hear Bible stories, do activities, and practice sharing the love of Jesus. It is our goal that Kindergarten students move comfortably to first grade with the following skills:

  • Good understanding of letters, consonant sounds, short vowel sounds and words, and sight words.
  • Recognition of numerals one to 31, and count past 100.
  • Beginning concept of addition and subtraction.
  • Ability to speak and write good sentences.

Kindergarten students have weekly music, art, physical education, Spanish, and library time. They experience field trips, have class theme parties, and participate in show and share time.

First Grade

Mrs Hein

Gail Hein has been teaching first grade at Immanuel since 2000. She has a B.S. in Education from Concordia College (now University) in Portland, Oregon. Prior to teaching at Immanuel, she taught in Oregon and Idaho for 17 years.

Mrs. Hein enjoys singing her way through the school days with her students and likes to relax by traveling or reading a good mystery.

First Grade Curriculum

Classroom activities throughout the year facilitate the transition from the sensory and active learning styles of early childhood to more structured activities in reading, writing, and math.

Direct instruction in reading, phonics, and writing, paired with individualized activities give children a solid foundation for success. Many types of quality literature instill a love of reading and learning in the children.

Saxon Math and a variety of supplemental materials and manipulatives provide solid understanding, consistent practice, and frequent review of critical mathematical skills including problem solving, math facts, Geometry, measurements and place value.

Thematic units allow for an integrated exploration of science and social studies. Throughout the year the class studies:

  • living things
  • weather
  • magnets
  • the human body
  • healthy habits
  • basic American History
  • geography
  • various cultures

Students actively participate in music, art, physical education, Spanish, computer, and library classes.

Students also present an annual Christmas program, take various field trips and celebrate special occasions with class parties.

Second Grade

Mrs Metcalfe

Leona Metcalfe has been teaching at Immanuel since 1985. She has taught both the Middle School and 2nd grades during this time. She earned a B.A. at the University of Northern Colorado. Her hobbies include sewing, crafts, gardening, and reading.

Second Grade Curriculum

God's love is the motivating force in our curriculum. The Bible provides orientation for all subjects and learning experiences. Children¿s faith in Christ is nurtured through God¿s Word, preparing them to serve God and others in their daily lives. Using the following guidelines, it is our goal that 2nd grade students will move comfortably into 3rd grade.

Reading: We use a strong literature-based curriculum, phonics, and a variety of reading-related activities.

Math: Sound grasp of number sense, concepts, and mastery of addition and subtraction facts, with an introduction to multiplication.

English: Traditional grammar-based curriculum and practical writing strategies taught through the ¿Step Up To Writing¿ program.

Science: We teach a creation-based curriculum.

Social Studies: Introduction to neighborhoods, communities, and countries with components of geography, history, and map skills.

Second graders have weekly music, art, physical education, computer, and library times. They participate in field trips, the curriculum fair, spelling bee, field day, and they attend fine arts productions. Second graders also attend weekly Chapel services and have an opportunity to interact with students of other ages in "Chapel Family" times and activities.

Third Grade

Mrs Hemmen

Rosella Hemmen has been teaching at Immanuel since 1984. She graduated from Concordia University in Seward, NE, with a B.S. in Elementary Education. Hobbies she enjoys include flower gardening, reading, but mostly spending time with her 4 children and 3 grandchildren.

Mrs Meyer

Juli Meyer has been teaching at Immanuel since 1983. She received a B.S. in Education from St. John's Lutheran College, and also has post-grad hours at Chapman University. She enjoys art and especially loves creating murals. She also enjoys spending time with her husband, two children, two dachshunds, and loves to cook.

Third Grade Curriculum

God's love is the motivating force in our curriculum. The Bible provides orientation for all subjects and learning experiences. Children¿s faith in Christ is nurtured through God's Word preparing them to serve God and others.

Using the following guidelines, it is our goal that 3rd grade students will move comfortably into 4th grade by obtaining:

  • A sound grasp of number sense, concepts, mastery of addition, subtraction, and multiplication with introduction to division.
  • Independent reading and comprehension of longer works of fiction (chapter books) and non-fiction along with skills for fluency.
  • Traditional grammar based curriculum, practical writing strategies taught through the "Step Up To Writing" program.
  • Creation based science.
  • Introduction to communities and countries with components of history, geography and map skills.
  • Development of organizational skills and good study/work habits.

Third graders have weekly music, art, physical education, computer, and library time. They participate in field trips, curriculum fair, field day, spelling bee, and they attend fine arts productions. Third graders also attend weekly Chapel services and have an opportunity to interact with students of other ages in "Chapel Family" times and activities.

Fourth Grade

Mrs Grimm

Elizabeth Grimm has been teaching fourth grade at Immanuel since 1997. She has a B.S. in Education from Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, Indiana, and a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction with specializations in Literacy from Lesley University, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Mrs. Grimm taught grades 3, 4, and 5 for 9 years in Chicago prior to moving to Colorado. Mrs. Grimm loves to incorporate sign language into her class teaching.

Fourth Grade Curriculum

God's love is the motivating force in our curriculum. The Bible provides orientation for all subjects and learning experiences. Our core curriculum follows a scope and sequence pattern where each level prepares students for the next one. Foundational concepts are regularly reinforced and then built upon with new concepts, facts, and ideas.

It is our goal that fourth grade students move comfortably into fifth grade with the following skills:

  • Sound grasp of number sense, concepts, and all four mathematical operations.
  • Sound grasp of six main parts of speech and the ability to integrate them into writing assignments.
  • Varied word attack skills for decoding longer words, enhanced vocabulary, and strong reading comprehension strategies.
  • Study of the five regions of America, their natural resources, and completion of a special unit of study on our state of Colorado.

Fourth graders have weekly music, art, physical education, library, and computer time. They participate in field trips that connect to the study of Colorado, including a special trip to the Plains Conservation Center in Aurora, CO, where they spend a day immersed in Colorado history. Students have the opportunity to lead one Chapel service during the year, serve in several servant projects, and learn sign language.

Fifth Grade

Mr Aho

Mr. Tim Aho received a B.S. in Education with a history minor from Concordia College, St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1975. During his career he has served as Athletic Director and taught grades 4 through 8 at 3 different Lutheran schools. At Immanuel, Tim has served as Athletic Director and taught at Immanuel since 1986. Tim has been named in Who's Who Among America's Teachers 5th, 8th, 9th and 10th issues. He has a current Professional License for Elementary Education from the State of Colorado.

Fifth Grade Curriculum

Bible: The 5th grade religion materials are designed primarily to help teach students about key concepts of faith, such as Law, Gospel, confession, repentance, forgiveness, and grace, while focusing specifically on the person, attributes and work of our triune God.

Math: Students will go through the foundation of many areas of mathematics, including geometry, measurement, algebra, and scale and graph reading. Math facts are a high priority.

Language Arts: Reading includes oral/silent reading, comprehension, fluency practice, book reports and vocabulary building. Writing includes capitalization and punctuation, sentence structure, creative writing, outlines, notecards, and book reports. Spelling is word studies based on phonics, spelling rules and weekly tests. Grammar includes 8 parts of speech, antonyms, homonyms, synonyms, dictionary and thesaurus skills.

Science/Health: Students will study Earth Science and use hands-on experiments and activities to learn about plants, animals, matter, our solar system, and rocks and minerals. Students also have the opportunity to participate in a school Science Fair. For Health, students will learn about the human body including circulation, respiration, digestion, skeleton, muscles and nutrition.

Social Studies: Students will study U.S. history through the Civil War. Students will also learn different map types and usage, continents, oceans, states and capitals, natural resources, climate and government.

Sixth Grade

Mr Voth

Blaine Voth has been teaching at Immanuel since 1998. He received a B.S. from Kansas State University in Speech Communications. After graduation he went to Regis University and received an Education degree. Blaine loves being with the students. He enjoys teaching the future. Along with teaching, Blaine is the head track coach at Immanuel and coaches football at Berthoud High School. He enjoys being with family and friends.

Sixth Grade Curriculum

Religion: Study the Book of Matthew, prophecies and fulfillment, Lord¿s Supper and Baptism, Daily life applications, Memory (Bible passages, office of Keys).

Language Arts: Reading and Literature including oral reading, comprehension, reading for a purpose, summaries, propaganda techniques, symbolism, fluency practice, vocabulary building, historical fiction, non-fiction, prose, poetry, and Haiku; penmanship includes cursive written work; spelling covers weekly word studies based on phonics and weekly tests; English writing includes Step Up To Writing, capitalization, punctuation, and quote rules, sentences and parts, essay writing and personification, outlines, 3-5 page research paper, book reports, and creative writing; English grammar covers diagramming, antonyms, homophones, synonyms, dictionary and Thesaurus skills, research skills, subject/verb agreement, and all aspects of grammar and parts of speech.

Science/Health: Earth-Plate tectonics, earthquakes, volcanoes, and oceanography; life-cells and microbes, cell reproduction, and heredity; physical nature of matter, kinds of matter, how matter changes, and forces of motion.

Mathematics: Place values of whole numbers and decimals, mastery of fundamental operations, problem solving, Roman numerals, estimation and rounding off, English and Metric measure, and measurement conversions; all operations with fractions and decimals, prime factoring, ratios and proportions, percents, probability, graphs and scale drawings, intro to statistics, geometric shapes, perimeter and area, bisecting angles, equation solving and algebra, banking, and tessellations.

Social Studies: Study of 7 major regions of the world, physical and human geography features, plotting on maps, and interpreting charts and tables.

Seventh Grade

Mrs Williams

Droxsan Williams has been teaching at Immanuel since 1999. She has a B.S. in Education from Concordia College, Seward, NE. Mrs. Williams also taught Preschool through Middle School at Montessori Schools. Mrs. Williams has lived in Loveland her entire life and attended Immanuel Lutheran School before Middle School was added. Mrs. Williams loves to be with family and friends, enjoys outdoor activities, and playing games of all types.

Science: Students focus on a number of life science themes.

English/Spelling: Students learn grammar and writing skills for essay and term papers.

Social Studies: 7th graders study Ancient World History from creation to The Reformation.

Spanish I Advanced Spanish: 7th graders have the opportunity of taking a Spanish I Level Spanish program during their 7th and 8th grade years during electives. Students will then have the option of entering high school at the Spanish II level.

Old Testament Survey: Key themes are studied from each part of the Old Testament.

Electives: 7th graders have the opportunity to choose among numerous options or electives including fine arts, speech, handbells, cooking, and music/band/choir.

Literature: Students read a variety of literature selections.

Physical Education / Health: Students participate in physical conditioning and a variety of sports/activities and also study important developmental themes related to their health and growth.

Eighth Grade

Mr Howard

Duncan Howard has been teaching at Immanuel since 2000. His degrees include a Professional Teacher Education Licensure Program, Master of Divinity and Theology, Master of Arts, Cross Cultural Ministry, and a B.A. in Interamerican Studies. He has taught at Quest Middle School, Christian Academy of Guatemala, and served as a Youth Pastor. Duncan enjoys sports, woodworking, gardening and camping.
